Radio Station

Setting up a radio station requires a certain level of expertise and a range of kit to get started.
To set up the basic radio station the following items would be necessary.

  • Microphone+Stand (Condensor)
Because you need some way of getting the sound into the software.
A condensor microphone is better than a dynamic microphone due to the fact that they record sound at a much higher quality, the only reason dynamic microphones are better is because they are far more rugged, however due to the fact that radio stations tend not to abuse their microphones, the quality is preferred over ruggedness.

Examples
  • Speakers for monitoring
This is so you can hear what you have recorded, however should be used carefully in conjunction with the microphone, due to feedback.

Examples

  • Software i.e sound broadcaster
This is so your sound has somewhere to go, and transmits this sound from one piece of equipment to another.

Examples
  • Acoustic treatment
This is key to a good sound when recording due to the acoustic resonance of the walls. If you have none, you'd end up with a very undesirable sound.

Examples
  • Mixing Desk
This again is a vital piece of equipment due t the fact that the sound has to be manually edited to create the best sound. It also helps to turn the microphone off/on and also with fading.

Examples
  • Laptop/computer
This is so your software can go on something. It doesn't have to be the fastest, but a decent computer helps.

Examples
  • Headphones
So you can hear the sound without the worry of feedback.

Examples

  • Transmitter
A transmitter is only required when you are broadcasting over am/fm frequencies. A few simple tips are not to use the same frequency as someone else, and on a large scale you have to make sure that the towers are set differently otherwise they may interfere.

These are not requirements, but help to keep the radio makers happy.
  • Chairs/tables
  • Air-con
